چکیده

Several studies have clearly demonstrated the capability of suitable algorithms based on satellite images to detect fires scars by using optical and radar data. In the near infrared region (0.7-1.3 micron) green vegetation shows high reflectance values compared to the most other natural surfaces. In general this region of the spectrum contains the most useful information on burned surface detection. After a fire occurs, in fact, a strong reflectance decrease can be found in the burned area. Generally, in a burned surface, the reflectance falls to a low level (5-15 %) because of the presence of ash and carbon over the soil. For this reason the NIR is the more appropriate spectral region for burned areas detection, allowing high contrast between burned and unburned surfaces. Taking the advantage of using the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for mapping forest volume or above ground biomass in big area, within the burned area, this instrument has been used to detect deep fire scars in order to provide more information on the fire event .

Object-based image classification for burned area mapping of Creus Cape, Spain, using NOAA-AVHRR imagery

Due to the ability of the NOAA-AVHRR sensor to cover a wide area and its high temporal frequency, it is possible to quickly obtain a general overview of the prevailing situation over a large area of terrain and, more specifically, quickly assess the damage caused by a recent large forest fire by mapping the extent of the burned area. The aim of this work was to map a large forest fire that rece...

Forest Fire Danger Projections in the Mediterranean using ENSEMBLES Regional Climate Change Scenarios

We present future fire danger scenarios for the countries bordering the Mediterranean areas of Europe and north Africa building on a multi-model ensemble of state-of-the-art regional climate projections from the EU-funded project ENSEMBLES. Fire danger is estimated using the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index (FWI) System and a related set of indices. To overcome some of the limitations of ENSE...

Increasing Spatial Detail of Burned Scar Maps Using IRS-AWiFS Data for Mediterranean Europe

A two stage burned scar detection approach is applied to produce a burned scar map for Mediterranean Europe using IRS-AWiFS imagery acquired at the end of the 2009 fire season. The first stage identified burned scar seeds based on a learning algorithm (Artificial Neural Network) coupled with a bootstrap aggregation process. The second stage implemented a region growing process to extend the are...

Object-based Vs Pixel-based Mapping of Fire Scars Using Multi-scale Satellite Data

Assessment and mapping of burned areas using satellite data has been implemented so far at local, regional and global scale, by employing various image analysis techniques, according to the spectral and spatial characteristics of the remotely sensed data. The spatial resolution of satellite data together with landscape configuration guides of the decision for the classification approach to be a...

Localization Boyan algorithm to detect forest fires from MODIS sensor images

Of phenomena which much damage and irreparable import to forests and natural resources is the fire that each year, more than 100 fires occur in Iran and thousands of hectares of trees and plants eliminates. Given that fire risk is high in most parts of the world, full and continuous monitoring on this natural phenomenon, is essential. Use remote sensing is a way to identify and manage fire. Ahe...
